Wojciech Szczęsny was one of the stand out performers for Barça in Sunday's defeat against Real Madrid in the Santiago Bernabéu. It was a first Clásico in Madrid for the Polish keeper who topped off his display with a spectacular penalty save from La Liga top scorer Kylian Mbappé.

Unfortunately, Szczęsny's nine saves could not help Barça to avoid defeat in a high intensity encounter. Aside from his penalty save in the 52nd minutes, the blaugrana keeper also made important stops to deny the likes of Huijsen, Vinicius, Bellingham and Rodrygo.

Szczęsny puts an end to a run

The penalty save from Mbappé has garnered the headlines and also ended a run of 23 penalties scored by Barça's opponents, since Marc ter Stegen saved Roger Martí's spot kick in a game against Levante in April 2022.

The last time Real Madrid missed a penalty in a Clásico came some 34 years ago, in June 1991, when Emilio Butragüeno's effort was saved by Andoni Zubizarreta. The most recent penalty save before Szczęsny's heroic came back in 2008 when Iker Casillas saved a spot kick from Samuel Eto'o.

Another name on the list

Kylian Mbappé now joins a list that contains the likes of Messi, Neymar, Kuyt, Dzeko, Parejo, Higuaín, Kessié and Oshimen, the latest talent to be denied from the penalty spot by Wojciech Szczęsny.
