FC Barcelona has obtained Biosphere certification, a recognition that the club develops its goods and services in accordance with methods that reflect a responsible attitude to society and the environment. Sustainability is one of the cornerstones of the 2026 Strategic Plan, and affects different areas, including financial, governance, sports, social and environmental aspects. In keeping with this approach, the club is working to promote sustainable development in all its areas of action and thus achieve some of the leading certifications in this field.
The Biosphere certification is aligned with the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and the United Nations 2030 Agenda, and is awarded by the Responsible Tourism Institute (ITR), an independent body created in 1995 with the aim of promoting sustainable development actions and programmes. The ITR was created with the support of UNESCO and is a founding member of the Global Sustainable Tourism Council (GSTC). Since 2017, Biosphere has established itself as the leading global sustainability certification system aligned with the 2030 Agenda, its 169 Targets and the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
At FC Barcelona, both the club and the museum have been recognized with this certification after reporting a total of 202 indicators - 111 from the club and 91 from the museum - related to issues such as climate change, sustainable energy, water, biodiversity, protection and responsible consumption, as well as sustainable infrastructures, sustainable tourist destinations, cultural heritage, economic and inclusive development, health and safety, the promotion of inclusive and quality education, gender equality and women's empowerment, the reduction of inequalities and dignofied labour, among others.
At the beginning of last season, the club launched its Sustainability Area, with the aim of working on the definition and implementation of a strategic plan that is aligned with the 2030 Sustainable Development Goals. This includes actions at all levels of the club to reduce emissions and waste, increase energy efficiency and foster the use of renewable energies.
General sustainability criteria
The club has defined and agreed on some basic criteria in order to move towards greater sustainability. These are the optimization and saving of resources, through efficiency in the use of materials, energy consumption and water, the careful and responsible use of resources, achieving a reduction of waste and the reuse of materials whenever it is possible
In order to foster the application of environmental criteria, the club already has several certifications that guarantee that its materials, processes, services and operations have been subjected to controls. These eco-labels include Blauer Engel, Ecolabel, FSC, Green Range and Green Star System.
In addition to the online publication of the 'Guide for a Green Office' and the 'Guide to the Biodiversity of FC Barcelona in Les Corts', the club has already incorporated certain measures, among others, recycled and non-recycled chlorinated paper, certified by Blauer Engel, which implies a reduction in the use of resources during the manufacturing process compared to conventional paper, -72% energy, -83% water and -53% CO2, the reduction of single-use bottles by providing a reusable aluminum thermos bottle to all workers, the inclusion of sustainability measures in any type of tender, the installation of photovoltaic solar panels to promote renewable energy and self-consumption and the installation of electric charging points for sustainable mobility
