President Joan Laporta visits Barça Store Canaletes for new shirt launch and stresses the club's links to the Barcelona 92 Olympics

President also visits Musemu, where an Olympic torch will represent the historic connection between Barça and the games that did so much for the city 30 years ago

In the year that the city is commemorating the 30th anniversary of the Barcelona 92 Olympics, Barça has drawn on the event for the new 2022/23 uniform that went on sale this Friday. President Joan Laporta spent the morning visiting the Barça Store at Canaletes on La Rambla, one of the stores where the new shirt will be on exclusive sale together with the Barça Stores at Camp Nou, Passeig de Gràcia, Roca Village and Barcelona Airport T1 and T2, as well as the club’s e-commerce outlets. He also went to the Museum, where the club is displaying an Olympic torch to symbolise its association to the Games.

Laporta used the occasion to print a shirt with the words Barcelona 92 on the back of the shirt, which also carries the name of UNHCR/ACNUR in support of refugees. This is also the first shirt to bear the name of the club’s new main sponsor, Spotify, on both the men’s and women’s kits.

The design of the shirt itself is inspired by the new light that was cast on the city of Barcelona following the creation of open spaces and the new seafront. It features the usual red stripe and two different shades of blue, one darker than the other, emphasising that idea. The same navy blue also appears on the sleeves, neck, shorts and socks.

The president was joined on his visit to the museum by its director Jordi Penas and the advisor to the presidency, Enric Masip, the former handball player who happens to be one of the Barça athletes who took part in the 1992 games. His recently printed shirt will be going on display in the museum along with the torch from the 1992 Olympics, thus symbolising the historic connection between Barça and those games.

The Camp Nou and Palau Blaugrana were two of the venues used in 1992. The former staged football matches, including the final in which Spain beat Poland 3-2, with Pep Guardiola, Albert Ferrer and Antoni Pinilla all part of the team. The Palau Blaugrana hosted taekwondo, judo and the exhibition sport of roller hockey.

As well as the three footballers, other Barça athletes in 1992 were Juan Antonio San Epifanio (the final torch-bearer that year), Andrés Jiménez and José ‘Piculín’ Ortiz (basketball); Enric Masip, David Barrufet, Ángel Hermida, Iñaki Urdangarin and Lorenzo Rico (handball); Josep Benito and Joan Carles (hockey); and Jaume Barroso and Daniel Martí (atletics).

What many still claim to be the best Olympics ever were a turning point for the city of Barcelona, which since that year has become one of Europe’s most visited cities for tourism, corporate and many other reasons.
