The mosaic for the UWCL Clásico: 'More than empowerment'

A message in support of gender equality to feature at Camp Nou in the build-up to the high profile European fixture against Real Madrid

The first ever game for the Barça Women at Camp Nou with fans in the stadium is to have a mosaic that befits the occasion, just like on the great nights featuring the men’s team. The blend of blaugrana colours with the yellow and red of the Catalan flag will symbolise a call for gender equality in sport. The biggest stadium in Europe is set to fill for the game, and it sends out a clear message to aspiring young girls all around the world. You can do it too!

There have been 77 mosaics at Camp Nou since the first on 7 March 1992. The most recent was for the men’s Clásico last October 24. But this is the first for a women’s game, as the team take on Real Madrid to contest a place in the semi-finals of the UEFA Women’s Champions League.

The two teams are both from the same league, but this is European fixture and a chance to make a point for equality, diversity and inclusion that crosses borders. That’s why the design features colours that symbolise Barcelona and Catalonia, but the message itself is in English.

The words “More than Empowerment” will be emblazoned across the Lateral terrace, and the female symbol will appear behind the two goals, which follows on from the club’s imaginative idea on International Women’s Day to create the Venus symbol by adding a new line just beneath the centre circle. The blaugrana trim then continues all the way to the main grandstand, where it meets the four stripes of the Catalan senyera flag.

History of support

FC Barcelona has a long history of fostering greater participation of women in sport, and where football is concerned it has been doing so for over half a century.

Indeed, it is one of the reasons why Barça have been acclaimed as “More than a Club” all around the world. In line with this, a recent campaign has been using the tagline “More than Gender”, which covers the club’s many actions to encourage and promote women’s football and sport in general.

Historic Clásico

Barça are going into the game on March 30 as the defending UWCL champions, and with a strong chance of progressing to the next round after winning the first leg in Madrid 3-1. This game is set to break the record attendance for a women’s game, and all fans and members are being called on to come and cheers the team on.

The first tickets sold out quickly and the few remaining ones are selling fast too. It promises to be a momentous occasion, and the mosaic will add to the atmosphere of a women’s football match like none before
