An emblematic dome

The roof of the Palau is formed by a 76.4 metre concrete dome and the lighting is formed by 1,272 diamonds that create the design

Designed by the Catalan architects Francesc Cavaller and Josep Soteras, the first brick of the Palau was laid on 24 September 1970 under the presidency on Agustí Montal Costa with work commencing on 23 October 1971. The cost of the project was 135 million pesetas and its defining characteristic is the great dome, built out of reinforced concrete which at the time made it one of the most modern and noteworthy basketball venues in Spain. 

The dome weighted 3,000 tonnes and need 1,000m3 of concrete. First the initial pieces for the dome were installed, supported by a tubular skeleton, it was completed in phases.
