Barça’s captain tells that the team is ‘eager and excited to start the competition’

Everything is ready to go for the start of Champions League 21/22. Barça welcome Bayern for the first group stage match with a kick-off time of 9:00pm CEST this Tuesday. A real clash of the titans and the Barça players are "eager and excited to start such a special competition again."

Those were the words of captain Sergio Busquets during Barça v Bayern pre-match press conference. Sergio also mentioned that "getting a good result is vital" and that they aim "to show top form to earn what would be such a crucial first win."

All the same, he knows that a tough task lies ahead: "Bayern are a very difficult opponent. They are powerful, complete, and solid. They control all parts of the game and will also want to get off to a good start as we are in a difficult group."

Sergio also discussed one of the current stars of the team, Memphis, as well as the start of a new chapter:

On Memphis

"Memphis has hit the ground running, not just with his goals and assists, but also in terms of the work he puts in every day. He’s been a good signing and I hope this is just the start of a great career at this Club. He already has great rapport with the fans and brings excitement. He has fitted in very well too, and always shows great willingness. He is very open and always wants to learn, get to know his team-mates and add to the good atmosphere. Such players are always welcome here."

On the new chapter

"Our collective character is very important. We know that Leo isn't with us anymore, but we are excited about this new chapter. We always have our feet on the ground, but we are very determined."

"It just needs to be approached in the best possible way. We have to be clear about what we want to achieve on the pitch."

"We believe in the coach, the coaching staff, and the players. It’s been a very tough time, with many changes, but everyone here is pulling in the same direction."

"Messi’s exit was a shock to the system and tough to swallow. It was a difficult time, but we have to move on now."
