Stat of the day | 91: Messi's goals in a calendar year
79 goals for Barça and 12 for the Argentine national team allowed Leo to beat Gerd Muller's record in 2012
In 2012 Leo Messi hit the absolute heights. The Argentine scored 91 goals in a calendar year: 79 with Barça (59 in La Liga, 13 in the Champions League, 5 in the Copa del Rey and 2 in the Spanish Super Cup) plus 12 with the Argentina national side. As such, the Argentine surpassed Gerd Müller's record of 85 goals from 1972. If we add in the 24 assists he made over the 12 months then we can say that Messi played a part in 115 goals in 2012: out of this world.
