A homage to players in the first Clásico

A commercial recorded by FC Barcelona’s Global Partner CUPRA commemorates the first ever trip by the Catalan club to Madrid to play in the first ever Clásico.

More than 100 years ago, when football was nothing like as popular as it is now, a group of Barça players travelled to Madrid to play in the first ever Clásico. This is the journey now being commemorated in a new commercial by CUPRA, FC Barcelona’s official Automotion and Mobility Partner, on the occasion of this Wednesday’s game between Ernesto Valverde’s side and Real Madrid at the Camp Nou.

It happened on 13 May 1902. FC Barcelona and Madrid F.C met in a game at the ‘Hipódromo de la Castellana’. This was years before the first football stadium existed in the country, and when the game was still viewed as something of an exotic new craze imported from Great Britain. The commercial reconstructs the long, arduous train journey made by the team from Barcelona to Madrid, a landmark event that would later go down in the history of the sport. The travellers included Joan Gamper, Vicenç Reig i Falomir and Alfons Albéniz Jordana, who took up the challenge of defending the blaugrana colours in the capital.
