Social network ranks Catalans above Real Madrid, Manchester United and Liverpool

FC Barcelona was the sports club that earned the most mentions on Twitter in 2019. According to data published by the San Francisco based service, Barça is top of the list ahead of Real Madrid, Manchester United, Liverpool and PSG.

The top nine clubs in the list are football teams, with only the Los Angeles Lakers in tenth interrupting complete domination of the Top Ten.

Like every year, Twitter analyses conversations on its channel, and also the number of single users who speak about a given topic. In its section on sports clubs, Barça is far above the rest in terms of citations of its handle @fcbarcelona or related keywords between January 1 and November 15, reflecting the club’s status as a global phenomenon.

In 2019 there were a number of key moments that saw interest in Barça surge. These included the 46th Liga title, the games against Real Madrid, the signing of stars like Griezmann and De Jong and a number of individual achievements by Leo Messi. In fact, despite not having an official Twitter account of his own, Messi was the second most mentioned male athlete of 2019, ahead of Cristiano Ronaldo, Lebron James, Kawhi Leonard and Kobe Bryant. Only Neymar Jr topped the Argentinian in the ranking.

FC Barcelona was also tops for social interactions generated, which includes retweets, likes and comments on posts. With the December data still to come in, the club was in first place in seven out of eleven months in 2019.

Barça currently has Twitter accounts 9 in nine different languages, and is the sports team with the biggest number of followers, a massive 57 million.
