Olympique Lyonnais 4 – 1 FC Barcelona: Runners up in Europe

Barça are outdone by an effective French side in the first half and fall in their first ever Champions League final

It wasn't to be. The dream of hoisting the Women's Champions League trophy will have to wait. FC Barcelona lost to Olympique Lyonnais in Budapest on Saturday, 4-1, with the French side scoring all four goals in the first 30 minutes. Marozsan scored in the 6th, and Hegerberg needed just 15 total minutes to raise the score to 4-0. Before all of that, Barça did have a golden opportunity when Duggan had a shot following a recovery by Mariona.

Lyon were not to be surprised, though, and took advantage of its speed on the wings to strike first. Marozsan was the first, scoring on a centering pass from Sanden on the right wing. Then, their bevy of stars took over and put the game out of reach. Hergerberg scored three times in a quarter hour, and showed why she won the 2018 Ballon d'Or.

Barça's focus then turned to playing for pride.

Great second half

Barça showed its personality after the break, keeping their spirits up and playing their game by dominating possession for long stretches. They consequently enjoyed more scoring chances: Alexia with a header, Martens and Vicky Losada also just missed.

And Oshoala finally got the blaugranes on the scoreboard one minute from time, getting free of Renard and beating Bouhaddi with a low shot from inside the area.

Then the final whistle sounded, leaving the Barça Women with the experience of having played in their first ever Champions League final. Glory will have to wait. For now, the team deserves recognition because being runners up in the Old Continent's top club competition is just the beginning of a bright future.
