FC Barcelona will fight for the Cup, says Puyol

The FC Barcelona captain says that Messi "is very eager to play" and that "the team play better" with the Argentinian on the pitch "We played a great match and we're pleased with the result," says Pedro

Carles Puyol returned to FC Barcelona’s starting line-up and played the entire 90 minutes on Wednesday after missing out on the team’s two most recent matches. “We knew that it wasn’t going to be an easy game and we want to fight for the Cup and win all of our matches,” said the FC Barcelona captain.

On the standout players of the match was Leo Messi. Puyol highlighted the fact that the Argentinian “was very eager to play and he did a good job. We need him, he’s the best player in the world and with him on the pitch, we’re all better.”

“I have to take advantage of the time I’m given on the pitch”

Puyol also revealed that “I have to progressively get minutes on the pitch, and take advantage of what the manager gives me; when I don’t play, I have to train.” When asked about Barça’s next rival in the league, the Catalan said that “it’s an important match against one of the best teams in the world.”

Here are the statements made to the press after this evening’s match against Getafe:

Pedro Rodríguez

“Getafe were fresh in our minds because of our recent league game against them. You can’t believe the game is won until the match is over. We played a great game and we’re pleased with the result.”

“It was hard to come to the Camp Nou and watch the game, especially because it was televised and because of the kick off time, which was a bit late for people who work and for children. But the people who came put in a great effort and we are thankful.”

“Messi was great, he trained hard all week.”

Javier Mascherano

“Messi made a good return. I haven’t had a lot of chances to speak with him but in his second goal you can see that he’s back to his typical runs, that explosion of pace is just different. I’m pleased because these past two months have been complicated and he shied away from the limelight in order to focus on his recovery - I think it’s served him well.”

“The tie isn’t over. In Getafe we have to finish what we started, but we do have a good advantage.”

“The important thing is that we all feel as though we’re a part of the team, it doesn’t matter who plays, we’re defending Barça’s crest and we’re all important.”

“I’ve never felt as though I’ve had a secured starting spot, and I’ve never felt like a substitute, I’ve always wanted to give the best of myself and that’s how it’s going to be until my final day here.”
