Six former first team players are now managing teams in Segunda A. Eusebio Sacristán, Sergi Barjuan, Albert Ferrer, Lluís Carreras, Victor Muñoz, and Abelardo Férnandez sit on the benches of Barça B, Recreativo, Córdoba, Mallorca and Sporting. Here’s a brief look at each one of their teams and Barça careers:
Eusebio Sacristán: He managed Barça B since the 2011/12 season. In his first two years at the helm, his teams have always finished in the upper half of the table (8th and 9th), and this year Barça B are third with five games left of the schedule. He played for FC Barcelona from 1988 to 1995.
Sergi Barjuan: The former Barça left back played who the first team from 1993 to 2002 is now the manager of Recreativo, he’s been there since 2012. The Andalusian side finished 13th in his first year at the helm and this season they are 9th, level on points with Sporting Gijón (play-off position).
Albert Ferrer: One position above Recreativo, and with the same amount of points, are Albert Ferrer’s Córdoba. The former FC Barcelona right back (1986 to 1998) has managed the Andalusian side since February. His team will also fight for a promotion play-off spot.
Lluís Carreras: Formed in the FC Barcelona academy and member of the first team in 1995/96, Carreras has managed the historic Mallorca team since February. Of the five former Barça players who now manage in Segunda A, he’s the one who’s in the most complicated position. The islander team are 18th and only have a one-point advantage over Girona.
Víctor Muñoz: He took over the reins of Zaragoza last March, replacing Paco Herrera. It’s Victor’s second time at Zaragoza, who are currently in fifteenth position in the Second Division. Born in Zaragoza in 1957, he played for Barça from 1981 to 1988. He was a fans favourite at Barça, due to his great work ethic in midfield
Abelardo Fernández: The former Barça player (1994 to 2002) will manage his first game at the Sporting helm this weekend, against Hércules. His challenge is to stay in the seventh position on the table, which guarantees a promotion play-off spot at the end of the season.
