Spain women come up just short in 1–0 loss to Brazil

Five FC Barcelona women — Marta Torrejón, Leire, Alexia, Virginia and Marta Corredera — start, while Sònia comes on in second half

The Spanish Women's national team was oh so close to chalking up a valuable point against Brazil — one of the world powers in women's football — but came up short in a 1–0 loss to the Canarinha in Group E play on Saturday night in Montreal, Canada. Spain played a great first half, with very solid defensce and several dangerous scoring chances, but the Brazilians were the ones to break the ice on 44 minutes when Andressa Alves banged home her own rebound after her initial shot was stopped by defender Celia Jiménez right on the goal line.

Six FC Barcelona players contributed as Marta Torrejón, Leire, Alexia, Virginia, and Marta Corredera all started and Sònia came on in minute 77 as Spain were pushing hard for the tying goal. Sònia connected beautifully with Vero Boquete a few minutes from time but the draw didn't come. Irene had a shot that hit the post in injury time.

Spain now have just one point after two games — they drew 1–1 with Costa Rica on Tuesday — but still depend only on themselves to get out of the group stage. Spain face South Korea on Wednesday.
