Agreement to extend Rafinha's contract to 30 June 2020

Agreement reached for the Brazilian international to remain at FC Barcelona for at least another five years

FC Barcelona announced on Monday morning that an agreement has been reached with Rafael Alcántara, ‘Rafinha’, to extend his contract until 30 June 2020. His buyout clause has been set at 75 million euros, and the new contract will be signed over the next few days.

Unfortunate injury

Rafinha came up through the youth ranks at FC Barcelona to eventually win a place in the Barça B squad. Following some impressive displays at the Miniestadi, he spent a season on loan at Celta, playing under Luis Enrique, and then followed his manager back to Barça, this time as a fully-fledged first team player.

The younger of the Alcántara brothers gradually became more of a regular feature in games, making an important contribution to the treble winning campaign. This season got off to a fine start for the Brazilian, when he scored one of the goals in the European Super Cup triumph in Tbilisi.

Having also been picked for his national team for the first time, things then went wrong for Rafinha in the Champions League match in Rome. As a result of a Nainggolan tackle, he tore the cruciate ligament in his right knee and is currently out of action as he battled to regain fitness.
