One more trophy for the collection! Barça have capped an almost perfect season by winning the Copa de la Reina, beating Atlético de Madrid 2–0 in Saturday's final at the Estadio de El Alcoraz in Huesca. Victory gave Pere Romeu’s side their third trophy of the campaign, rounding off a domestic treble and confirming Barça’s continued dominance in Spanish women’s football.
Domination blocked by Atlético wall
With little time to prepare following the international break, which saw Rolfö pick up an injury, Barça were determined to impose their game from the outset. On the ball, they looked to rediscover the rhythm lost in Lisbon, while Paredes and newcomer Engen kept the dangerous Ajibade at bay.
As so often this season, Barça faced an opponent entrenched in their own half (and often in their own box) making it hard to break the deadlock. They thought they had done so with an own goal, but it was ruled out as Pina’s cross had come from just outside the field of play. Still, it was Pina, the liveliest player on the pitch, who eventually found reward for her persistence.
Pina leads the way
With a strike from the edge of the box, she broke the deadlock on 24 minutes to extend her outstanding run of form. Barça almost went into the break further ahead, but a dangerous header from Pajor went just wide. The Polish striker continued to be involved early in the second half, with two early chances, while some overconfidence from Cata Coll and a few efforts from Ajibade and Gio Queiroz served as reminders that the job was anything but done.
It had to be Clàudia Pina again. She hadn’t scored in the cup this season, clearly saving her goals for when it mattered most! After almost scoring with a curling shot that skimmed just wide, she pulled off an even better effort. Meeting a high defensive clearance first time on the volley, she struck an unstoppable lob past Lola Gallardo to make it 2–0, her 25th goal of the season
Treble queens
In the final minutes, Pina went in search of a hat-trick, but the scoreline remained unchanged. This was her final, just as much as it has been her season. Her brace secured Barça’s eleventh Copa de la Reina and another clean sweep of all domestic titles!
