Barça, best women's team of 2023

At the Ballon d'Or gala, the Barça women's team receive the award after a season in which they won three trophies

The Barça women's first team have been recognised as the best women's team of 2023. During the Ballon d'Or gala in Paris, the Barça Women players received the award after an exceptional season in 2022/23 in which they won no less than three trophies, amongst them a second Champions League crown.

President Joan Laporta, coach Jonatan Giráldez and one of the team captains, Patri Guijarro, picked up the prize. "In the name of FC Barcelona, we are very proud to receive this deserved award. I want to thank all the people who in Barça history have worked so hard to get us here," said the president.

League success

Jonatan Giráldez's team started the year establishing an unprecedented record of 62 consecutive victories in the league, a run which began on 6 June 2021 with a 3-2 win over Madrid CFF and which came to an end on 10 May 2023 with a 1-1 draw away from home at Sevilla.

In 2023 the team have recorded 18 wins, a draw and just one defeat in 20 league matches, scoring 75 goals in the process at an average of almost four per game. Defensively, Barça Women have also been outstanding in 2023. conceding just six goals and only conceding more than once in two matches.

And in Europe

In European competition Barça have taken four wins in five matches. Roma, Chelsea and Wolfsburg were beaten with 12 goals scored and just four conceded, lifting the Champions League for the second time in the Club's history. The final will live long in the memory with the blaugranes coming back from 2-0 down in the final to take the trophy with a 3-2 victory.

Records that leave a legacy

Being the best team in the world brings with it success and achievements. Aside from the run of 62 wins in the league, Barça this year have set another two records that will be difficult to beat.

Barça's opponents have a near impossible task when they come to play at the Estadi Johan Cruyff. Barça Women won 78 games in a row at home in all competitions, scoring 392 goals and conceding just 31. The run came to an end when Chelsea picked a 1-1 draw in the Champions League at the stadium in Barcelona.

Another record that will be difficult to beat is the run of 64 games unbeaten in the league. The run started, as we have mentioned, against Madrid CFF, and then came to an end against the same team when two goals form Kundanaji finally defeated a Barça side preparing for the Champions League final.
