Madrid CFF 2-1 Barça: Defeat in last league game of the season
Alexia scores her first goal since her comeback from injury but the blaugranes unbeaten run in the league comes to an end
Barça Women went down to defeat in the last league game of the season and so miss out on going the entire campaign unbeaten. The 2-1 loss away at Madrid CFF was eased by a first goal for Alexia Putellas following her comeback from injury.
The Madrid side started strongly and not for nothing are the fourth highest scorers this season in the league and they began the game in fifth place in the table.
After keeper Paños was forced into a couple of important saves early and Barça found it difficult to get into the contest. Geyse had the best chance for the blaugranes early on but it was Madrid who opened the scoring.
A long ball over the top saw Kundananji use her pace and with Paños misjudging coming out to meet the striker, Madrid were ahead on the half hour mark.
Home side keeper Paola made a couple of good save as Barça reacted but Kundananji struck again before the break to make it 2-0, a good finish at the near post from another long ball.
Paralluelo, who had come on for Oshoala, had the ball in the net but it was ruled out for offside. Alexia Putellas, who had come on at half time, showed that she has not lost her nose for goal after a long layoff, making it 2-1 on 63 minutes.
The Barça captain Putellas claimed a penalty just minutes later but it was not given as the blaugranes went down to their first defeat in the league since 1 July 2021. Now, for Jonatan Giráldez's team, all thoughts turn to Eindhoven and the Champions League final against Wolfsburg.
