Barça Women 9-0 Benfica: Landmark score to start the tournament

Barça dominated their first game in Europe this season against the Portuguese side, easily surpassing their goalscoring record of six in one game in the competition

It couldn't have begun any better. Barça Women started the 2022/23 Champions League in the best possible way, beating Benfica 9-0 while playing some good football at the Estadi Johan Cruyff. Goals by Patri, Aitana, Mariona, Crnogorcevic, Pina, Oshoala (2) and Geyse (2) racked up a new record for goals scored in one game in the competition, which was previously six. Alexia Putellas paraded her second Ballon d'Or before the fans prior to the match.

Total control

Barça took to the Estadi Johan Cruyff pitch looking to get some points on the board in Europe and it didn't take long, Oshoala rolling her marker to set up Patri from the byeline for 1-0. The chances kept coming thick and fast, with Oshoala, Mariona and Crnogorcevic having three quick chances in succession, a sign of things to come for Rute Costa in the Benfica goal.

Aitana then made it 2-0 on 14 minutes after a nod down from Oshoala - Barça Women's 150th goal in the Women's Champions League. They were in total control now, Oshoala scoring a deflected shot from distance for 3-0 (min. 34), a comfortable scoreline at halftime.

Landmark score

No let up after the break. Total dominance of the ball and not much to do by way of defending leaving the 5,004 fans in the Estadi Johan Cruyff really enjoying proceedings, but there was much more still to come.

Mariona scored in the 50th minute after a fine individual run and near post strike, before she then turned provider with a cross to the far post, Crnogorcevic heading in to make it 5-0 after 65 minutes.

The goalscoring continued through substitute Geyse, who finished a fine one touch move by Pina, Oshaola, and Patri, before the Brazilian twisted and turned on the right to feed Pina to make it 7-0 and a new goalscoring record.

Barça weren't finished though, Mariona stealing the ball from the Benfica defence before rolling the ball across the goal for Oshoala to tap in her second. There was still time for Geyse to complete her brace too, scoring a header from a corner, final score 9-0.

Yet another night that will go down in history for this incredible Barça Women team.
