Luis Enrique: Eight trophies in the bag with a possible three to come
The coach aims to add more silverware to the Club's collection after announcing his departure at the end of the season
Luis Enrique Martínez has announced after the resounding 6-1 victory over Sporting Gijón that he will be leaving his post as coach of FC Barcelona at the end of the season. The Asturian will not extend his contract and will see out three seasons as Barça boss. The former blaugrana player now faces the final three months of official competition with the aim of adding more trophies to an already impressive collection of honours.
After two and a half seasons in charge of the team, Luis Enrique has claimed eight of the 10 possible titles on offer. His first campaign as coach brought an historic treble and since then the trophies have come thick and fast. With three months remaining of his contract, he still has the chance to add the League, the Copa del Rey and the Champions League to his CV.
The ex-Barça player and former B team boss has two league titles, one Champions League, a European Super Cup, a Spanish Super Cup and a Club World Cup in his possession. 11 trophies in total is the objective with a Barça side still alive in all three competitions in 2016/17.
Despite the difficult position in which Barça find themselves in against PSG in the Champions League, the team will do all they can to turn things around next Wednesday at Camp Nou in the second leg in order to make it to the quarter-finals. In the league, with 13 games still to go, the blaugranes are fighting to claim their third title in a row and they are in the final of the Copa del Rey against Alavés which will be played in the Vicente Calderón on 27 May.
Luis Enrique is saying goodbye to his time as Barça coach but he has made it clear “three exciting months” remain ahead of him as he dedicates all his effort to ending his final season in style.
