FC Barcelona extends unbeaten streak in La Liga to 31 games, ties all-time Club record

The Catalans equalled the 31-game mark with a 2-0 win on Saturday at Eibar

FC Barcelona equalled a historic feat on Saturday, stretching its La Liga undefeated run to 31-games, tying an all-time Club record that had stood for almost seven years.

With a 2-0 win at Eibar, Barça now stands just one game from setting a brand new record, and its chance to break it will come at Camp Nou on Saturday, February 24, against fellow Catalan club, Girona. Kickoff is at 8.45pm CET.

The previous 31-game streak came with Pep Guardiola at the helm, and occurred during the 2010/11 season, when Barça did not lose a single game from weeks three to 33. That team won 27 games and tied four. This Barça team has now won 26 games and drawn five.

But while the Guardiola-led streak happened during a single league campaign, this current run is the work of two teams — and two managers. Last season’s Barça side, led by Luis Enrique Martínez, won the final seven games of the 2016/17 season, before he stepped down following a highly successful three-year stint.

This season’s team — led by Ernesto Valverde — picked up right where things had been left off, having yet to lose in La Liga this season. Barça is now riding a 24-game season-opening unbeaten streak, which itself is a club record.

Seven from the all-time La Liga record

With the club record now tied at 31 games and the chance to set a new Club record in the Girona match less than a week away, Barça is still seven games shy of the 38-game all-time record in La Liga. That mark is almost forty years old, and consists of an entire season’s worth of games, even if, like the current run, it was not set during a single season of play.

Real Sociedad went unbeaten in the final six games of the 1978/79 season before extending the run to their first 32 games of the 1979/80 season.

For Barça to tie or break the 38-game mark, it will have to go unbeaten through the following games:

#32— Week 25 — Feb. 24 — Girona

#33— Week 26 — Mar. 01 — at Las Palmas

#34— Week 27 — Mar. 04 — Atlético Madrid

#35— Week 28 — Mar. 10 — at Málaga

#36— Week 29 — Mar. 17/18 — Athletic Club

#37— Week 30 — Mar. 31/Apr. 1 — at Sevilla

#38— Week 31 — Apr. 7/8 — Leganés

#39— Week 32 — Apr. 14/15 — Valencia

It may seem like a tall order, but for this Barça, anything is possible.
