FC Barcelona face Atlético Madrid this Thursday in the first leg of the Copa del Rey semi-finals. A top-level clash at what is always a demanding venue: the Metropolitano.
“We’re playing against a fantastic team" said coach Hansi Flick at his pre-game press conference on Wednesday. "I watched their cup match against Betis and it was impressive. [Diego] Simeone is doing a great job at Atlético Madrid. I really liked what I saw. It will be a tough game.”
He went on to say that “these two matches decide who reaches the final, that’s the goal for both teams. Last season it was also difficult. It’s 180 minutes over two games, and we’re ready to fight to be in the final.”
For this match, Flick will be without Marcus Rashford, who is carrying a knock, as well as Raphinha, Gavi, Pedri and Christensen.
“We’ve had a few problems. Rashford isn’t ready" explained the coach. "He took a hit against Mallorca. It’s not good news, but I have complete confidence in my team.”
As for Raphinha, Flick explained: “We have to look after him because he’s a player who gives everything and plays with great intensity. It’s a situation I don’t like because we need him. Just as we need Pedri, Gavi, Andreas and Marcus.”
