Hansi Flick’s FC Barcelona go to Anoeta with one clear objective. To win. “If we want to win the league, we have to beat Real Sociedad,” said the German coach, who is pleased with his team’s mindset and attitude when it comes to getting results.

“It will be a tough match because Real Sociedad have some fantastic players" Flick said ahead of Sunday’s clash on 18 January in San Sebastián. "And they’re in good form after their recent results. They’ve grown in confidence since Matarazzo arrived.” 

Raphinha doubt

Much of the focus in the press room at the Ciutat Esportiva Joan Gamper was on individual Barça players. One of the main talking points was Raphinha: “He didn’t train because he took a knock. We still don’t know whether he’ll be available against Real Sociedad.”

La Masia prospects were also in the spotlight, prompting Flick to reflect on the club’s approach to young players: “We trust the youngsters. For me, it’s about working every day. I want them to see the potential they have. I analyse, I plan. They’re at one of the best clubs in the world, and minutes are not easy to come by. But every training session makes you better. That’s the process. When a player does things well and deserves to play, he plays.”

Healthy competition

Competition is part of any squad, but Flick is keen for every player to feel valued. Asked about the rotation between Lewandowski and Ferran Torres up front, he welcomed the competitive dynamic: “We have players who start matches and others who finish them. Everyone is important. That’s what I want for my team. They help us win games, and that’s what matters.”

Every piece counts. “We don’t win matches because of names, but because of attitude and mentality. That’s what I want to see in every game.”
