We have our Spanish Super Cup final, and it's another one between FC Barcelona and Real Madrid. Xabi Alonso’s side booked their place by defeating Atlético Madrid 2-1 in the second semi-final, setting up a title showdown with Barça.
It will be the second consecutive year that the two rivals meet in the final, once again at King Abdulaziz Sports City, the same venue where they face off this Sunday. Last season, Flick’s Barça overturned an early deficit to claim the trophy with an emphatic 5-2 victory.
While Barça sealed their place in the final on Wednesday with a dominant 5–0 win over Athletic Club, Madrid advanced thanks to goals from Fede Valverde and Rodrygo against Atlético.
Hoping to change history
Looking at recent editions of the competition, two striking statistics stand out ahead of Sunday’s final. The first is that it has been eight years since the reigning league champions went on to win the following Super Cup. The second is that no team has lifted the trophy in consecutive seasons for the past 15 years.
All the more motivation, then, for a highly driven Barça side aiming to lift the Super Cup once again, and add a 16th title to the club’s honours list.
