18 years since Messi's Maradona-like goal

On the evening of 18 April 2007, Barça and Getafe met in the first leg of the semi-finals of the Copa del Rey at Spotify Camp Nou. At the final whistle, Barça took a 5-2 win but that was not the most memorable thing about the match. With the blaugranes leading 1-0 just before the half hour mark, a 20 year old Leo Messi picked the ball up near the half way line and preceded to slalom his way towards goal, beating defenders before finishing perfectly to make it 2-0 to Frank Rijkaard's team. 

Messi left four defenders in his wake then rounded Getafe keeper Luis García for a memorable goal, one that brought back memories of Diego Maradona's effort for Argentina against England in the quarter final of the 1986 World Cup in Mexico.

The fans at Spotify Camp Nou rose to their feet after a goal that has seem few like it since. The Argentine youngster received an ovation from an astonished crowd, who like the rest of us, will never forget 18 April 2007.
