Who might FC Barcelona get in the next round?
Going into the final set of games in the Champions League, Barça still have a game to play against Royal Antwerp. Theoretically, the Catalans could still end up second in the group, although it would take a highly improbable pairing of outcomes for that to happen. Assuming Barça do go on to top the group, they would face one of the runners-up from the other seven groups in the round of 16. And here's a peek at who those teams could be.
Guaranteed second place teams
Two teams were already assured to finish second in their groups no matter what happens on the final day, and three more were confirmed following Tuesday's results (remembering that Barça could not play either Porto or Shakhtar Donetsk, as teams that already met in the group stage are kept apart).
Already assured second place before this week's games were PSV, a former European champion with a long history of playing in the latter rounds of this competition and with two former blaugrana stars in their ranks in Sergiño Dest and Luuk de Jong, and RB Leipzig, fourth in the Bundesliga as we speak and against whom Barça have never played before.
Inter Milan drew 0-0 with Real Sociedad on Tuesday, so the Italians had to settle for second place and are a potential opponent, being one of the two teams that qualified from the group stage at Barça's expense two years ago.
FC Copenhagen are the surprise qualifiers from Group A after they beat Galatasaray 1-0, leaving the Turks second and Manchester United bottom of the group without even a Europa League berth as consolation.
And Napoli saw off direct rivals Braga 2-0 and are another potential opponent, and a familiar opponent for Barça, who they have met in both the Champions League and Europa League in recent years.
Other groups
The other two possible opponents will be decided on Wednesday. In Group E, two qualified teams are playing for top spot, although Barça would not be able to play Atlético Madrid should they finish second, meaning the only potential opponent is another Italian side, Lazio.
Finally, in what was styled the 'group of death' before the tournament began, Borussia Dortmund have already secured top spot, but there are three teams vying for the other place. Luis Enrique's Paris Saint-Germain are currently the best placed of the teams and also have the advantage of facing a team that has nothing to play for on the final day, i.e. Dortmund. Meanwhile, Newcastle United and AC Milan go into battle at St James' Park knowing that they not only need to win, but will also be dependent on PSG slipping up in Germany.
