Xavi: 'We need to regroup'

Following defeat to Shakhtar, FC Barcelona coach admits that his team have not been playing as well as they should

Xavi Hernández is not a happy man. There just hasn't been the right level of intensity from his team in recent weeks, and that was one of the main reasons why they have just suffered their first defeat of the season in the Champions League. Speaking to the press after the final whistle, the Barça coach said "we are at a bad point of the season, and it is showing on the pitch. We need to be self-critical because today was one of the worst games since I've been here. We need to regroup."

"We need to get our football back and play the way we are recognised for. I am going to need to work hard to recover my players' confidence."

A single point against Shakhtar would have been enough to ensure qualification for the knockout stage, but Barça are still very well poised to progress, and as Xavi says, "our destiny is in our own hands and we haven't lost anything yet."

Oriol Romeu: 'We need to improve'

Barça midfielder Oriol Romeu spoke in a similar vein to his coach, saying that "this is a difficult moment and we're not playing our best football. We need to be self-critical. We found it hard to create chances tonight, and we weren't sharp in front of goal. And that encouraged our opponent."

"That was a tough defeat. We really wanted to seal qualification today and we didn't do it. All we can do is keep working hard to improve and allow fewer chances to our opponents. We need to look for solutions."
