Leo Messi becomes the most decorated player in history

The Argentinian has now won 44 trophies, 35 of which came with Barça, becoming the world's most decorated player

Inter Miami and Lionel Messi have just become Leagues Cup winners, with the side from Florida winning on penalties in Nashville after a 1-1 draw in normal time. This latest tournament win makes it 44 for the Argentinian, who joins Dani Alves as the most decorated player in history.

35 trophies with Barça

35 of Messi's 44 trophies came wearing an FC Barcelona jersey. The 2004/05 Liga title was his first, with the last being the Copa del Rey in the 2020/21 season. The long list of course includes four Champions League wins (2006, 2009, 2011, 2015).

Having played for 17 seasons, 778 games and scoring 672 goals, Leo Messi has won 10 Ligas, 7 Copas del Rey, 8 Spanish Super Cups, 4 Champions Leagues, 3 European Super Cups, and 3 World Club Championships. A roll call of honours that now makes him the most decorated player in history after the Leagues Cup win.

A player for the big games

Messi also scored to make it 1-0 in the Leagues Cup final, which is no surprise given that he has scored 37 goals in finals. He scored 31 of those while wearing the blaugrana jersey, including the memorable goals in Rome and Wembley in the 2009 and 2011 Champions League finals respectively against Manchester United. He also scored the goal against Estudiantes in the 2009 World Club Championship to ensure the record six trophy winning season.

Away from Barça, the Argentinian scored two goals in the recent 2022  World Cup final, plus his penalty in the shootout, as his national side overcame France in Qatar.
