Record-breaking defensive stats

Barça's form at the back is unrivalled this century with 16 clean sheets and seven goals conceded in the 21 league matches so far

The defensive stats for Barça this season are record-breaking. They are the only team to earn so many clean sheets and concede so few goals in 21 league games in the 21st century. The Catalans have only conceded seven goals so far this season, keeping 16 clean sheets.

What's more, 11 of the 18 wins have been won by the odd goal, and there have been eight 1-0 victories, the first time since the 96/97 season.

Clean sheet record

FC Barcelona are the first team to earn 16 clean sheets from the first 21 games in the league in the 21st century. You have to go back to the 1993/94 season for the previous time a team achieved this feat, namely Deportivo de La Coruña.

Barça have conceded goals against Real Madrid (3), Espanyol (1), Real Sociedad (1), Real Betis (1) and Osasuna (1), whereas the Galician side from the 93/94 season conceded goals against Real Sociedad (1), Osasuna (1), Athletic Club (3), Valencia (1) and Real Sporting de Gijón (1). Truly similar stats with one team scoring three goals and the others scoring one.

Deportivo de La Coruña ended the season conceding only 18 goals, while keeping 26 clean sheets.

Dizzying goal difference

In addition to the clean sheets, Barça share another stat with the Deportivo de La Coruña team from the 93/94 season - 7 goals conceded in 21 games. Xavi Hernández' squad have currently scored 43 goals, with 18 wins, two draws, and one defeat. Deportivo scored 29 goals in the 93/94 season, with 13 wins, six draws, and two defeats.

Lastly, despite the goal stats for the Galician side, Barça ended up being crowned league champions, scoring 91 goals and conceding 42, while Deportivo finished second, scoring 54 goals and conceding 18. In fact, the head-to-head between both teams decided the league (DEP 1-0 BAR; BAR 3-0 DEP), as both teams had 56 points.
