In the 82nd minute of the Poland's game with Saudi Arabia, with his side already a goal to the good, Robert Lewandowski latched onto a loose ball to find the net. And it was a very special one for him. At long last he was able to celebrate a goal at the FIFA World Cup.

It means Poland go top of Group C, pending the outcome of Mexico v Argentina later on today.

"I am aware that this might be my last World Cup" he said after the game. "I had always wanted to score at a World Cup and it has happened at last."

Lewy also played at Russia 2018, but didn't get to score on that occasion, and missed a penalty in this year's opener against Mexico.

Goal and assist

Lewandowski also played a part in the Poland's first goal by providing the assist for Zielinski, in doing o becoming the first Polish player to achieve such a double since Janusz Kupcewicz against France in 1982.

Tied with Pelé

Lewandowski now has 77 goals for his country, the same number as the 77 that Pele scored for Brazil. Poland now face Argentina in the final game of the group stage as they aim to reach the knockout stage for the first time since Mexico '86.
