Raining goals in historic fashion

Five straight wins by three goals or more. FC Barcelona have not had a run like that since 2010/11

The 3-0 defeat of Elche at the Spotify Camp Nou was Barça's fifth in a row in La Liga by three goals or more. That's the longest such run for over a decade, with Pep Guardiola being the last coach to string together such a streak.

G-g-goals!

After a subdued start with a 0-0 draw at home to Rayo Vallecano, things flashed into place with a 4-1 win over Real Sociedad at the Reale Arena. That was not quite as spectacular as the 6-1 win there two seasons ago, but it's not as if Barça usually run riot in San Sebastian. Before that, they hadn't won there by three goals since the 6-0 win in 2000/01.

Barça then beat Valladolid 4-0. It wasn't the first big win against the Castilians. There was a 5-1 in 2019/20 but the biggest of all was 7-1 in 1958.

Joy in Seville

Next came a 3-0 victory at Sevilla. Xavi added another big win at one of the league's toughest grounds to the collection, and it was was a reminder of the 4-1 win at the Sanchez Pizjuan in 2013/14, the 3-0 in 2008/09 and the 4-0 in 2004/05.

Then came a 4-0 victory in Cádiz and back at Spotify Camp Nou, Elche were despatched 3-0. These are two fixtures that the Catalans often win by wide margins.

Xavi matches Guardiola

The last run of five 3+ wins came under Pep Guardiola in 2010/11. That really was a quite spectacular series of results:

Almeria 0-8 Barça (with a Leo Messi hat-trick)
Barça 5-0 Real Madrid
Osasuna 0-3 Barça
Barça 5-0 Real Sociedad
Espanyol 1-5 Barça.

That amounted to a 26-1 goal difference in favour of Barça compared to the 18-1 of the current run. Barça will now be looking to add another big win to their run when they visit Mallorca on October 1 at 9pm CEST.
