The Argentine star had an excellent season ending La Liga as top scorer as well as leading in several other statistical categories

Leo Messi has had yet another successful season at FC Barcelona, leading the league in several attacking statistical categories. Let's take a more detailed look at the individual areas where the Argentine is a cut above the rest: 

Goals (30)

The blaugrana number 10 was top scorer in La Liga for the fifth season in a row and the eight in total. Messi scored 30 goals in 35 matches in the 2020/21 season, ahead of Real Madrid's Karim Benzema and Villarreal's Gerard Moreno who managed 23 each.

Most shots on goal (91)

Messi had more efforts on target with 91 than any other player ahead of Benzema (55), Gerard Moreno (47) and Rafa Mir (46).

Most shots in total (196)

Almost 200 efforts from the Argentine during the league season. some way ahead of his nearest rivals Benzema (123), Rafa Mir (120) and Luis Suárez (104).

 

Most shots off the woodwork (8)

Leo came so close to adding to his 30 goals on no less than eight occasions, one more than Benzema (7), and Gerard Moreno, Suárez and Isak (5).

Goals from free kicks (3)

One of Leo's specialities and his three season have taken his total to 50. Joselu with two is the only other player this season in La Liga with more than one strike from a free kick. 

Most goals from outside the box (8)

Aside from his three free kicks, Messi scored another five from outside the box, well ahead of second placed Benzema (4) and Rafa Mir, Joselu, Kroos and Parejo on three. 

Most chances created (77)

Messi is not just a goalscorer as he created more chances for other players than anyone else ahead of David Ferreiro (73), Kroos (67), Navas (64) and Aspas (62).

Most dribbles attempted (261)

Messi is always willing to take players on and nobody attempted more dribbles during the 2020/21 season than the Argentine. 

Most dribbles completed (159)

Of those 261 dribbles, 159 were successful ahead of Javi Galán (121), Fekir (85), Gerard Moreno (71), Bryan Gil (67) and  Ocampos (67).

Most fouls received (99)

Messi is always a player who is watched by his opponents and he is the man who received most fouls with 99 ahead of Galán (97), Fekir (93) and Kike Garcia (92).

Most shots after dribbles (62)

Dribble and shoot - what could be more Leo Messi. He did just that on 62 occasions in the league ahead of Fekir (37), Suso (28) and his team mate Dembélé on 27.
