1X1: How they fared for their countries

A look at how the FC Barcelona players have got on this last few days with their national teams

Yet another international break is over, so now it’s time to take a look and see how the Barça players and their teams got on:

Leo Messi (Argentina)

Played all 90 minutes of a disappointing 1-1 draw with Paraguay and far more encouraging 2-0 win in Peru. The results leave Argentina second in the Conmebol zone’s 2022 World Cup qualifying table.

Argentina Messi

Sergi Roberto and Sergio Busquets (Spain)

Neither played in the friendly with Holland that ended in a 1-1 draw, and then they both started the Nations League game with Switzerland that also finished 1-1, although Sergio Busquets came off injured after 72 minutes and sat out the decisive game with Germany. Sergi Roberto played all 90 minutes of the history-making 6-0 battering of Germany that saw Spain through to the Final Four.

Antoine Griezmann and Clement Lenglet (France)

Lenglet played the first 80 minutes of the unexpected 2-0 defeat at home to Finland, while Griezmann came on after 57 minutes. But France won both their Nations League games to reach the Final Four, 1-0 in Portugal and 4-2 at home to Sweden. Lenglet played no part in either while Griezmann was involved throughout in both.

Francisco Trincão (Portugal)

Played 74 minutes of the 7-0 friendly win against Andorra (7-0), 18 minutes of the 1-0 defeat at home to France (which meant they missed out to the French on the chance to defend their Nations league titles at the Final Four) and 45 of the 3-2 win in Croatia.

Frenkie de Jong (Holland)

Played the first half of the 1-1 draw with Spain (a friendly), and was then on for the full 90 of the 3-1 defeat of Bosnia and the 2-1 win in Poland, but the Dutch eventually missed out to the Italians in the chance for a Final Four berth.

Miralem Pjanic (Bosnia & Herzegovina)

Played the first half of a 2-0 defeat of Iran in a friendly, 89 minutes of the 3-1 loss to Holland and 77 minutes of the 2-0 defeat to Italy. Those results mean his team has been relegated to League B for the next Nations League.

Martin Braithwaite (Denmark)

Could not play in the friendly with Sweden due to contact with a positive case of Covid-19, but was back for the first 76 minutes of the 2-1 defeat of Iceland and the 4-2 defeat to Belgium, which saw the Belgians through to the Final Four at the Danes’ expense.

Sergiño Dest and Konrad (United States)

Sergiño Dest played 87 minutes of a 0-0 draw in a friendly with Wales and the full 90 of the 6-2 crushing of Panama. Konrad played 71 minutes of the game with Wales, but wasn’t used in the second game.

Pedri and Iñaki Peña (Spain U21)

Pedri played 74 minutes of the 2-0 defeat of the Faroe Islands but didn’t feature in the 3-0 defeat of Israel. Goalkeeper Iñaki Peña played neither game. Spain have cruised the group and will be among the teams at the finals in Hungary and Slovenia next year.

Rey Manaj (Albania)

The Barça B striker played the second half of a 2-1 win in a friendly against Kosovo, and then was on for 86 minutes of the 3-1 defeat of Kazakhstan, scoring his team’s third goal from the penalty spot. He also scored a penalty as his team beat Belarus 3-2. That result meant Albania topped their Nations league group and will be playing in League B next time.
