The Hungarian team returns to the group stage of the European competition after 25 years, having got through four preliminary rounds

CHAMPIONS LEAGUE RECORD

Ferencváros, Barça's first opponents in the 2020/21 Champions League, are returning to the group stage of the competition after 25 years. There only previous appearance at this stage was in 1995-96, when they finished third in a group shared with Ajax, Real Madrid and Grasshopper Zurich.

They have qualified this time after getting through no fewer than four qualifying rounds. They beat Djurgårdens IF of Sweden (2-0), Glasgow Celtic (2-1), Dinamo Zagreb (2-1) and finally Molde FK of Norway on away goals after the two legs ended 3-3 on aggregate.

SQUAD

The best known face at Ferencváros is their coach. Sergei Rebrov, a former Dynamo Kiev striker, has managed the Hungarian team for two years and won two league titles in that time. Of the squad, striker Franck Boli stands out. The Ivory Coast player is the team's main striker and scored a total of 10 goals last season.

Most capped internationals: Róbert Mak (Slovakia 58), Gergő Lovrencsics (Hungary 36), Ádám Bogdán (Hungary 20), Lasha Dvali (Georgia 14), Roland Varga (Hungary 13), Eldar Ćivić (Bosnia 11)

HISTORY

Ferencváros was founded in Budapest in 1899, the same year as FC Barcelona. Unlike other clubs (most notably MTK, Úpjesti Dózsa, Hónved and more recently Debrecen) there has never been an era when the green and whites have totally dominated Hungarian football, but the most widely supported team in the country has been consistently strong and their 31 league titles are a record. Their 23 victories in the Magyar Kupa, the national cup competition, are also a record.

Internationally, their greatest success was the 1965 Fairs Cup, where they beat the likes of Athletic Club and Manchester United to reach the final, where they stunned Juventus despite the game being played in Turin. Ten years later, they were on the verge of winning the European Cup Winners' Cup, but lost the final to Dynamo Kyiv. Curiously, they now share a Champions League group with the two teams they have met in continental finals...

Ferencváros are currently second in the Hungarian league table, but have a game in hand on leaders Fehérvár.

PRECEDENTS

Barça and Ferencváros have never met in official competition but have played a total of six friendlies, all in Spain and dating back to 1923. Of those, Barça won four and the others ended in a draw, with the most recent coming in 1977.

STADIUM

The Groupama Arena is a UEFA category 4 stadium with a capacity of 23,700 spectators. Inaugurated on August 10, 2014 in a match against Chelsea. It was also the stadium that hosted Barça's first ever appearance in the Women's Champions League Final on May 18, 2019, game that ended in 4-1 defeat to Olympique Lyonnais. Barça will play there on December 2 at 9.00pm CEST.
