UEFA keen for domestic leagues to be completed

If the seasons cannot be finished as planned then the governing body recommends a change of format to ensure qualification for UEFA competitions on 'sporting merit'

The UEFA Executive committee met on Thursday via videoconference to discuss the latest updates from the Calendar Working Group set up to resolve fixture issues in the light of the current global health crisis. Two scenarios are being examined, both of which foresee domestic competition recommencing ahead of European competition with one examining the option of domestic and European games being carried out in parallel and the other seeing domestic competition completed before UEFA competition restarting in August.

A UEFA statement explained the body's stance: "UEFA urges National Associations and Leagues to explore all possible options to play all top domestic competitions giving access to UEFA club competitions to their natural conclusion. However, UEFA stresses that the health of players, spectators and all those involved in football as well as the public at large must remain the primary concern at this time.

The ideal scenario, should the pandemic situation permit it, is to have the currently suspended domestic competitions completed enabling football clubs to qualify for UEFA club competitions on sporting merit in their original format. Should this outcome not be possible, in particular due to calendar issues, it would be preferable that suspended domestic competitions would restart with a different format in a manner which would still facilitate clubs to qualify on sporting merit."

The next meeting of the UEFA Executive Committee will take place on 27 May.
