SD Eibar 0-3 Barça: Winning run continues

A goal each for Griezmann, Messi and Súarez as a tremendous team display is too hot for the hosts to handle

FC Barcelona are temporarily top of the league after picking up three points in Saturday’s early kick-off at Eibar.

It was a confident showing from the blaugrana, who only really looked in trouble for the opening few minutes. From then on, it was full steam ahead, with each of the front three getting on the scoresheet.

But there were no individual heroes today. This was an all-round stellar team performance. Samuel Umititi was astounding at the back, returning from injury as if he was never away, and Frenkie de Jong was so good that the Ipurura fans offered him an ovation when he was replaced towards the end.

French fancies

The only downer was Sergio Roberto picking up a knee injury. Hopefully, it’s nothing serious.

Clement Lenglet joined the party with his first assist for Barça, finding Antoine Griezmann, who took advantage of Eibar defender De Blasis losing his balance to smartly convert past Marko Dmitrovic.

As the game progressed Barça were becoming more and more dominant, but would not find the net (a Luis Suárez goal disallowed for offside excepted) until after the break when a series of short passes in the box ended up with Leo Messi firing in his second goal of the season.

Suárez builds his legend

Just four minutes later and it was all over. Luis Suárez had scored in his six previous meetings with Eibar and was determined to keep the record going. Griezmann and Messi were both involved in the build-up and the latter could have scored an incredible 17th goal in 10 games against the Basques but instead decided to lay up the Uruguayan.

It’s also a goal that ties Suárez with the legendary Josep Samitier as Barça’s fourth all-time highest goalscorer.

All in all, a thoroughly solid display from the Catalans ahead of the return of the Champions League and a trip to Prague in midweek.
