Getafe CF 0–2 FC Barcelona: A capital victory
Goals from Luis Suárez and Junior Firpo gave Barça three well-earned points at a traditionally difficult stadium
Bright Madrid sunshine greeted the players as they stepped out at the Coliseum Alfonso Pérez, with both sides on the front foot as soon as the whistle blew.
Barça’s Carles Pérez had been lively on the right wing, and came closest to opening the scoring after 10 minutes, weaving into the area and forcing a save from David Soria.
As the blaugrana looked to exert pressure on their hosts, Luis Suárez also went close. Getafe were being denied the ball for long periods and having to resort to playing on the counter attack as Barça gained a foothold.
As so often this season, Marc-André ter Stegen spread himself well to deny Ángel a goal on 20 minutes, before Suárez went straight down the other end and almost found the net again, his shot grazing the post.
The rest of the first half passed without too much incident, until Ter Stegen’s incredible clearance on 41 bypassed everyone and dropped right in Suárez’s path. His cool, chipped finish (0-1, min 41) gave Barça the lead at the break.
Within four minutes of the restart, Junior Firpohad slotted home Barça’s second (0-2, min 49), thanks to Soria parrying Carles Pérez’s shot directly into his path.
Scoring the second so quickly after the break settled the visitors down, and allowed them to play a more natural game.
Getafe rarely threatened thereafter, though Ter Stegen was called upon again in the latter stages. By then, Arthur had gone close with a long range effort and Clément Lenglet had been sent off for a second yellow card. In the end, it was a comfortable and deserved victory.
