Messi and Rakitic nominated for UEFA Goal of the Season

Liverpool and Tottenham were on the receiving end of two of the memorable goals of 2018/19 in Europe

Ivan Rakitic’s wonder-volley against Tottenham in the Champions League group stage and Leo’s Messi bombastic free-kick against Liverpool in the semis are among the candidates for the UEFA Goal of the Year 2018/19.

They’re up against strikes from Sarr (Stade Rennes), Faupala (Apollon), Pedro (Chelsea), Millot (France), Katerina Svitkova (Slavia Prague), Cristiano Ronaldo (Juventus), Nani (Sporting Lisbon) and Danilo (Portugal), and you can cast your vote (hopefully for one of the Barça duo, of course) by going here.

Messi net-burner at Camp Nou

The world watched on agape as Messi smashed in his famous free-kick against Liverpool. Powerful and perfectly struck from 25 meteres, there was no way Alisson Becker was stopping that one as it weaved its way past a five-man wall and Sergio Busquets to find the top corner of the net.

You won’t see many better free-kicks in a lifetime, and what’s more, it was goal number 600 for the Argentinian in a Barça shirt, and it’s already been voted the best goal of the last edition of the UCL.

Rakitic wows Wembley

And third in that count came our Croatian’s scorcher against Spurs. A perfectly struck shot from outside the area made it 2-0 in a game that Barça would ened up winning 4-2 – and that goal was named best of the group stage.

Two great goals and sure to be two of the most voted in this contest. Don’t forget to add your vote to the tally!
