Leo Messi, Champions League top goalscorer

With twelve goals, the Argentinian leads the way in Europe once again

The 2019/19 Champions League has come to an end and Leo Messi, with 12 goals, has finished as top scorer in the competition once again.

With no players from either of the finalists (Liverpool and Tottenham Hotspur) having scored more than five goals, it was something of a foregone conclusion that the Argentinian was going to be adding another trophy to his gargantuan collection.

The Barça star finished four goals clear of Robert Lewandowski (Bayern Munich, 8) and four players tied in third with six goals each.

That’s now five times that Messi has topped the Champions League charts after doing it four times in a row between 2008/9 and 2011/12, while in 2014/15, he shared the honour with team-mate Neymar and Cristiano Ronaldo of Real Madrid.

He’s done it despite missing two games in the group stage through injury- scoring a hat-trick against PSV, and netting braces against three different English clubs, Tottenham, Manchester United and Liverpool – his twelfth and final goal of the competition (that fantastic free kick against Liverpool) being his 600th in a blaugrana jersey.

To cap yet another tremendous season, in which he scored 51 goals in 50 appearances across all competitions, Messi also led the scoring in La Liga and collected yet another European Golden Shoe.
