Martín Montoya passed through all youth categories at FC Barcelona before making his first-team debut under Pep Guardiola on February 12, 2011, away at Mallorca in a 3-0 win for Barça. A reliable right-back he played a total of 67 matches for the first time as a blaugrana. 

A right-back with great attacking ability and very reliable defensively he joined FC Barcelona as a youth team player. His quality and versatility allowed him to progress through the different youth categories of the club until reaching the B squad, where he played 75 matches. His first team debut came in a league match in February 2011 under coach Pep Guardiola, who brought him on in the final stretch of a 3-0 win away at Mallorca. In total, he played 67 official matches and scored 2 goals.

After four seasons, the last of which included loan spells at Inter Milan and Betis, he signed for Valencia in the summer of 2016. In 2018, he moved to England to play for Brighton, where he stayed for two years. Betis decided to bring him back in 2020, and he stayed with the Andalusian club until 2023. His final stop as a professional footballer was at Aris Thessaloniki, where, at 34 years old, he hung up his boots at the end of the 2024-25 season.
