Andreu Fontàs joined FC Barcelona’s youth team from Girona’s academy. A powerful central defender with excellent vision and a great passing range, he made his competitive first-team debut under Pep Guardiola in August 2009. After seven years at Barça, he was transferred to Celta in the summer of 2013. In 2018, he crossed the Atlantic to begin what would be his final footballing adventure, playing for Kansas City, where he spent seven seasons.
Born in Banyoles on 14 November 1989, Andreu Fontàs began to stand out in Girona’s youth ranks. His quality did not go unnoticed by FC Barcelona scouts, and he was signed in the summer of 2006. He started out in the youth team and, before long, moved up to the reserves, coached at the time by Luis Enrique. Fontàs was part of an extraordinary generation of players that included Bartra, Sergi Roberto and Thiago Alcántara. On 31 September 2009, he made his debut for Pep Guardiola’s first team on the opening day of the league season. Fontàs came on in the 83rd minute to replace Gerard Piqué in a 3–1 defeat of Sporting Gijón. In total, he played 16 first-team matches for Barça and scored one goal, against Rubin Kazan on 7 December 2010 in the Champions League. After two seasons with the senior team, then one on loan to Mallorca, he signed for Celta Vigo, where he spent five years. Finally, in 2018, he joined Kansas City in MLS. Fontàs hung up his boots at the age of 35 in January 2025.
