CD Ebro v Barça B: Winter champions! (1-2)

The blaugranes end 2016 on top of Group III in Division 2B with 39 points and they are sole leaders in the table thanks to Alcoya's draw

Barça B avoided their third draw in a row with a win in their last game of the year before the winter break. The blaugranas top the table with 39 points, two more than Alcoya as they were only able to draw 1-1 against Atlético Baleares. Gerard López's men had to fought hard to get the victory and it went down to the wire before they were able to celebrate three precious points.

Ebro started brightly and had the first chance of the match from a Gabarre attempt. However, Barça were solid defensively and they were able to keep the home side at arms length for the most part. When Ebro found a way through, such as in the 14th minute Jose Suárez saved well from a Valero header. Gerard López's team managed to work some chances of their own and Jesús Alfaro opened the scoring with a great goal from the edge of the box.

Barça B dominated the game following the goal. The visitors almost went two up when Alfaro created a chance for Romera which he couldn't quite convert. Sarsanedas and then Romera again both had clear cut chances to increase the away team's lead but were unable to do so.

Frantic second half

Barça B threatened from the off and Palencia almost surprised the home keeper Montoya with a shot from a tight angle which brushed past the post. It seemed like Barça had picked up where they left off and looked like they would run away with the game. In the 61st minute Txemi recovered the ball and fed Romera but he was only able to shot over the bar with the goal at his mercy.

It looked like the blaugranas would win comfortably until a ball was put into the box and was eventually finished by Gabarre, their top scorer, following a series of hashed clearances. The unexpected leveller changed the games dynamic and the rest of the match was frantic. Barça were desperate to regain the lead and they had a clear chance to do so when Ferran Sarsanedas saw his shot saved by Montoya. However, straight after that Ebro countered quickly and almost scored themselves. It was end to end stuff.

Crucial goal secures victory

Gerard López's men regained their composure and got their reward at the death. Jesús Alfaro, who was the star on the day, scored his second of the match with an impressive volley in the box. The game looked like it was heading Barça's way but there was one more chance for Ebro in the 95th minute which they failed to take. All eleven home team players went up for a free kick and they put the ball in the back of the net but the referee ruled it out for a clear offside.

In the end, Barça B won 2-1 and this makes the winter champions as they are top of the league with 39 points going into the winter break. The next game Gerard López's side have is against Atlético Saguntí, who are eleventh in the table.
