Barça One, FC Barcelona’s free streaming platform, premieres this Wednesday, 11 June, the documentary "Mother and Footballer". The film tackles a subject rarely explored in professional football: motherhood in the careers of elite athletes.
The documentary features Irene Paredes (FC Barcelona and Spain), Amel Majri (Olympique Lyon and France), Marta Corredera (former FC Barcelona and Real Madrid player), Almut Schult (former German international goalkeeper) and Alice Pignagnoli (Palazzolo, Italy).
For the first time, five footballers share their experiences as mothers in their own words, including how they decided to have children, the personal and social barriers they faced, and how they have balanced high-level football with raising a family.
Told through an intimate, honest and deeply human lens, the film explores the players’ private lives. Barça One’s cameras, far from stadium floodlights, reveal the “other match” these athletes have played: being mothers in a historically male environment that is not always prepared (or willing) to support them. It is a story of courageous choices, unconditional love and a fight to rewrite the rules of the game.
The 83-minute documentary, produced by Barça Studios, is the result of more than two years of work by an all-female crew: producer Andrea Roig, director Marta Busquets, writer Cristina Collado and editor Paula Rabanal. The outcome is a moving, brave film that invites reflection on motherhood models, laborr rights and the role of women in sport.
