FC Barcelona participates in 'Barcelona 2030 Global and Sustainable'

Director of FC Barcelona Sustainability Area, Jordi Portabella, attends debate run by 'Expansión' newspaper and explains the club's sustainable practices and how they are being applied to the Espai Barça project

Sustainability is a fundamental part of FC Barcelona's 2026 Strategic Plan and one of the guiding principles of its daily activity. Everything the club is doing in this area was presented at yesterday's Barcelona 2030 Global and Sustainable event at the Caixaforum Palau Macaya in Barcelona, organised by the newspaper Expansión.

Under the title The challenge of the visitor economy, the director of the FC Barcelona Sustainability Area, Jordi Portabella, participated in this debate alongside Elisa Urrutia, Head of Global Sustainability Meetings & Events at American Express Global Business Travel, Clara López Sanjurjo, expansion director of Eurostars Hotel Company, and Antonio Capella, partner in the Sustainability area of EY Spain.

Portabella highlighted all the work that FC Barcelona is doing and how Espai Barça is such a clear example of its commitment to sustainability and everything that this entails. Barça is a hub for sports and tourism, especially football, which has a very relevant impact on the economic, environmental and social spheres, hence it is essential for a sport club like this to adopt sustainable and responsible practices. FC Barcelona is also applying this to everything related with the Espai Barça project and the different projects that are being applied to the design. The goal is to become a benchmark for good practices.

The director of the Sustainability Area explained that the future Spotify Camp Nou will be a sustainable and environmentally friendly infrastructure. He also highlighted the huge efforts that are being made to minimise the consumption of materials, promoting the circular economy and also more sustainable mobility, thus being more socially responsible through the adoption of measures that contribute to the preservation of the environment.

The discussion addressed the different initiatives that, from a sustainability point of view, are being implemented in each of the sectors of the companies represented by the participants. Sustainable tourism and its contribution to economic growth, the challenges for a city like Barcelona in terms of sustainability or the government policies necessary to encourage sustainable tourism practices are just a few of the topics that were tackled during the conversation.

Barcelona and its sustainability challenges

Barcelona 2030 Global and Sustainable is a conference organised by the newspaper Expansión that aims to locate the keys and trends for sustainable development, digitalisation and new models of tourism, urban planning and trade. In this context, it was debated how large metropolises face the challenge of sustainable development and the transformation towards new urban models. Barcelona is a prime example with its many programmes that seek to strike the right balance between modern and traditional, sustainable development and the attraction of talent and new industries, and the quest for quality tourism, making the city an example for others to follow.
