Alexia Putellas and Pau Gasol to receive Sant Jordi Cross
Barça women's team captain and the basketball legend to be decorated by the Government of Catalonia with one of the highest distinctions in the country
Alexia Putellas and Pau Gasol are to be awarded the Sant Jordi Cross. The current captain of the Barça women’s team, who won the Ballon d’Or on Monday, and former Barça basketball star Pau Gasol, will be receiving the prestigious honour from the Government of Catalonia.
On Tuesday, government spokeswoman, Patrícia Platja, announced the names of the 20 people and organisations that will be honoured. The ceremony is next December 13 in Barberà del Vallès, where Alexia will become the first woman footballer to be honoured this way.
Following Epi, Cruyff, Barris and Messi
Previous FC Barcelona recipients of the Sant Jordi Cross are Epi (1996), Johan Cruyff (2006), Tomàs Barris (2018) and Leo Messi (2019).
Created in 1981, the distinction honours natural or legal persons who by their own merits have served Catalonia in defence of its identity.
