Barça Rewind: The first ever title

December 22, 1901: Udo Steinberg scored six in Barça’s 15-0 win against Català FC to earn the Copa Macaya

In the third season of FC Barcelona’s existence, came their first title. Prior to their first Copa Macaya game on December 22, 1901, Barça had won three of the four friendlies played in that season - the other would be won a week later.

Their opponents in the competition would be Hispania, Club Universitari, Català FC and EspanyolTo say that the blaugrana cruised through to the final round would be an understatement.

In the eight games played, only two goals were conceded, in a 2-4 win over Hispania on January 6, 1902, and 60 scored. A 7-0 victory over Espanyol opened their account in the tournament, and that was followed up by an 8-0 win against Club Universitari.

15-0 to win the title!

Català FC would let in 12 against Barça towards the end of February, but that wasn’t their heaviest defeat. On March 23, 1902, Udo Steinberg scored six in Barça’s 15-0 win against them at the Antic Velòdrom de la Bonanova.

Gamper and Leask would also plunder a hat-trick each, whilst Parsons scored a brace and Quirante completed the rout. What a way to win your first title!
