Agustín Ubal will once again wear the Barça jersey. FC Barcelona and the Uruguayan player have reached an agreement on a contract running until 30 June 2029. Ubal, who stands 1.98 metres tall and will turn 23 on 19 July, also holds an Italian passport and qualifies as a home-grown player. He joined Barça in the summer of 2019 at the age of 16, made his first-team debut at 18, and now returns after making more than 120 Liga Endesa appearances for five different clubs.
"It's a pleasure for me to be back" Ubal told the club's media channels. "Ever since I left, I've always dreamed of this moment. I've worked very hard and I'm delighted and happy to be here, eager to get started and take on this challenge in the way it deserves."
A highly versatile perimeter player, Ubal is capable of playing as a point guard, shooting guard or small forward, and always brings great energy, both when driving to the basket and in his defensive work.
He describes himself as follows: "I'm versatile and I can play in all three perimeter positions. Whenever I'm on the court, I play with my heart and soul. I'll bring character and energy. I want Barça to succeed, as it always has."
Five ACB teams
The young Uruguayan talent joined Barça in the summer of 2019 at the age of 16, with enormous potential for development. He continued his progress with the junior team while also competing for Barça Atlètic in the Liga EBA.
Following the pandemic, in the summer of 2021, he took part in the first team's pre-season training camp in Encamp, and his efforts were rewarded with his official debut on matchday five of the Liga Endesa season away to Coosur Real Betis. Sarunas Jasikevicius also selected him for three further league games and one EuroLeague fixture away to ASVEL.
Ubal particularly remembers the brave decision to leave his home country: "I left my family in Uruguay to join a club that has given me everything, both academically and in sporting terms ... I was able to spend a season with the first team and that helped me realise where I wanted to be. Since then, I've continued to grow as a player, and now I'm back better prepared to take on this challenge."
In March of the 2021/22 season, the young player joined Río Breogán on loan to gain more playing time and top-flight experience. He continued his development with subsequent loan spells at Bilbao Basket (2022/23) and Zunder Palencia (2023/24). After leaving the club, he played for Coviran Granada (2024/25), before spending last season with BAXI Manresa.
He therefore returns after gaining experience with five different clubs, making a total of 129 Liga Endesa appearances. Last season with Manresa, he produced an excellent campaign, averaging 9.6 points and 3.4 rebounds per game. In the EuroCup, he played 17 games, averaging 11.5 points and 3.7 rebounds. He also gained European experience with Bilbao Basket, where he featured in eight FIBA Europe Champions League games, averaging 4.6 points and 1.3 rebounds.
Reflecting on his return, Ubal says it is the result of a great deal of hard work: "The key has been never giving up and always wanting to come back to the Club to defend this shirt and these colours. I always told my family that I wanted to return. Physically I've taken a step forward and I've gained a lot of experience."
Senior international
Ubal has also gained international experience with the Uruguay senior national team, making his debut at the age of just 17 by scoring 20 points in a victory over Paraguay.
