Mike Tobey, new centre for FC Barcelona

Pending a medical, the US-born Slovenia international will be joining the basketball team for one season

FC Barcelona and Mike Tobey have reached an agreement to sign the centre, born in the USA but holder of a Slovenian passport, for one season through to 30 June 2023 and pending a medical examination.

The 2.13 metre 27-year-old arrives as a free agent from Valencia Basket.

Liga Endesa experience

Tobey is a very mobile player, strong on the paint and also possesses a fine 3-point arm. Born in Monroe (New York) he played college hoops at the Virginia Cavaliers, and after a short stint at the Charlotte Hornets he moved to Spain, where he has appeared for Valencia Basket (128) and Tenerife (35).

Last season he averaged 6.6 points and 4 rebounds, which was below his overall average in 163 games in the Liga Endesa of 9.1 points and 5.2 rebounds across 17 minutes.

 

EuroLeague too

Tobey played 54 times for Valencia in the EuroLeagues of 2019/20 and 2020/21. In the latter he posted 9.6 points and 5 rebound over 19 minutes, with an impressive 39.6% for 3-pointers and 67.5% for twos.

Last term he was playing in the Eurocup, with 10.3 points (40% for 3-pointers) and 5.7 rebounds.

International for Slovenia

Tobey was granted Slovenian nationality in 2021, and played for his adopted country at the Tokyo Olympics, and was a key part of a fine performance from the side, offering an average of 13.7 points and 10.5 rebounds.

Tobey is country in the provisional Slovenia squad for the European Championship in September
