Umtiti, Dembélé and Rakitic ensure there will be a Blaugrana world champion

Umtiti, Dembélé and Rakitic ensure there will be a Blaugrana world champion | FCB

For the first time in history, FC Barcelona will have players in both teams at the World Cup final. Barça will be represented by Samuel Umtiti and Ousmane Dembélé for France, and Ivan Rakitic for Croatia after they defeated England in the second semifinal (2-1). Goals from Perisic and Mandzukic earned the victory after Trippier’s opener.

This unprecedented event will mean a World Cup final with the second most Barça representatives. In 2010, up to eight Blaugrana players were part of the Spanish team: Gerard Piqué, Carles Puyol, Sergio Busquets, Xavi Hernández, Andrés Iniesta, Víctor Valdés, David Villa and Pedro Rodríguez.

In addition, this ensures that there will be, at least, a world champion at the Club, who would become the 11th (and perhaps 12th) player to achieve this. Other than the eight players mentioned above, Rivaldo won the title with Brazil in 2002 as did Romario - the first to be a world champion as a Barça player - in 1994. It will be the third consecutive World Cup final with Barça representation too (2010, 2014 and 2018), which matches the World Cups from 1994, 1998 and 2002.
