Ernesto Valverde: 'We have a good feeling, above all with the level of the team'

The Blaugrana boss stressed the importance of an opening day win to begin the season on the front foot

In his post-match press conference following FC Barcelona’s 2-0 win over Real Betis, Ernesto Valverde said he had a “good feeling, especially at the level of the team given our absences”. “The team looked very good,” he continued.

“We created chances, though the tempo dropped a little after the break.”

The new coach also noted the importance of making a winning start to the La Liga campaign. “Winning like this was vital in getting back some good sensations following a bad result.”

Valverde was asked about his decision to field Leo Messi as a ‘false nine’. “It was a chance to use him in this position, which he knows well and can exploit the space to good effect.”

He also spoke about the change of system. “I don’t intend to change our system often but anyway, our overall style doesn’t change. The most important thing is that stay cohesive as a unit, both in defence and attack,” he remarked.

The coach also paid tribute to midfielder Sergi Roberto, who scored his first ever La Liga goal. “His work in attack and defence can be a big asset to us,” noted the manager. “He was great, so we’re delighted.”

“We have to keep going with a sense of normality. We really wanted to win tonight for all the victims of the attack,” Valverde concluded.
