After his first game in at Camp Nou as coach in official competition, Ernesto Valverde tried to be positive in his appearance before press following the defeat against Real Madrid in the first leg of the Spanish Super Cup. “It was a game in which we had some good moments and in which we were caught out on the counter by two great goals,” admitted the new Barça boss.
Not all was lost, however, with Valverde aware that the trophy was not yet in the hands of their biggest rivals. “We have to look ahead as there is still the second leg to come. Even though they will be favourites, the game is still there to be played.”
“We had chance in their area and I think we were closer to scoring than they were but when you do that you can switch off against Real Madrid. You never like losing, even less so against Madrid but aside from the blow of the defeat, there are things that we can rescue from the game.”
The Barça coach continued by admitting that his team have to “get it right in front of goal and not just create danger,” before ending on a positive note, reminding everyone of the “great players I have in my squad.”
